Māmaki
The distinct green and red of the endemic plant Māmaki (Pipturus albidus) is as vibrant as it is accommodating. Māmaki is a host plant to the threatened endemic butterfly, Pulelehua Kamehameha. The Pulelehua are on the decline possibly due to introduced predators and habitat loss. But what if we all grew at least one Māmaki? We could be part of the solution to increase the chances of thriving Pulelehua.
There are many uses for this lāʻau ʻōiwi (native plant). The bark of the Māmaki can be used to make kapa. The bright leaves can be used to create a brownish purple dye. Depending on how long you let the material marinate, youʻll have different shades. Another use of the leaves, that has become much more popular, is a rejuvenating tea. It is said that Māmaki tea has many health benefits. How do you use Māmaki? Here, weʻre excited to grow more Māmaki for the Pulelehua while brewing a cup or two of tea.
